Chennai Girls

Apart from a good review meeting at Chennai, I also managed a rather brief blogger meet with some old friends. (I realised they are more friends than just fellow bloggers now. )

Lavs, Mnamma, Uma, Apu thanks for making it. P- maybe next time.

**********
Revisited Toysdayout. It has tranformed into a large play place and is done up pretty well. Their collection of toys/ books has also increased. A good place indeed.

***********
Hope all the people I know in Mumbai are safe. So far no bad news.

Of Boo, Bloggers, Benjarong and a Boy

We had a get together on Friday evening for Tinner ( as JLT thoughtfully coined) in honour of our visitor from Switzerland- Boo and her adorable daughters. She was one of the first mommy blogs I read before embarking on blogging.

The do was held at my place and a lot of lovely ladies ( Mamma mia Abha, JLT, Monika, Poppin's Mom, Aryan's mom, Starry, Collection of stars, Artsy Craftsy Shruti, P, A, and Boo of course) and lovelier kids turned up. Lots of banter, craft courtesy Shruti, eats and fun happened.

********

Our wedding anniversary on Thursday, was marked by a yummy- rich dinner from Amma with both my SILs joing us as well and the girls having a ball with the cousins.

********

The poonal ceremony of Navy's young nephew was interesting and I was amazed at his involvement with the rituals and even allowing his head to be tonsured. S, really awesome! Anush is enjoying Blore a lot more due to the multiple family dos and therefore her proximity with her cousins/ second cousins galore.

We went to Benjarong last night with my maternal aunt from Delhi. A must do even in Bangalore. ( had only frequented this place in Chennai so far)

The Chennai Chronicles VII- Blogging Chums

Edited to add-

Last evening we had a lovely meet with most of the regulars, a farewell for crazymom and artnavy- as we move on to Blore.

It also was also a welcome party and the bday of a new Chennai blogger- ardra.

Needless to add there was music, masti and majaa

Happiness always multiplies when you share and I enjoyed sharing my little joys and big ones here with bloggers.

I still recall my first 'live' meet was with Hiphopgmom on one of her visits to Chennai in 2007. Me- a rookie mom and novice blogger and she a veteran grandma blogger!

The bloggers I have met since include the ones from Chennai and also some world famous ones who visited Chennai.

I will never ever forget the wonderful Baby shower I had right here for Aditi.

Blogging also is what led to the Mister Muthu series getting published in Chandamama. ( while on it check out the new online episode on the side bar here)

So from now on, when I read about Chennai blog meets, I will really miss you Chennai mommy bloggers - even more. Maybe I could remain on the mail list so that I can dash down to Chennai or time an office trip accordingly!

Yes we will be in touch on-line- but it is just not the same. Soem of the friends I made here through blogging- have gone on to become very dear family friends. You know who you are and I hope you visit us in Bangalore!

But I look forward to being on the list at Bangalore blogger friends meets.

Aditi in Person

Last evening was a blogger meet of a different sort- to introduce Aditi in person to the local blogger friends.

Lavs, IBH, Minka, Adya's mom, Timepass and H from Australia made it with kids and a few hubbies joined in as well. Itchy and her men had already come over anyway.

Thanks Lavs for stepping in and coordinating it for me.

Aditi's grandpa helped set up a slide show of her pics with an apt song( from the book I am going to be a big sister) much to Anushka's delight. My mom managed the food and a good time was had. Must mention that I got very thoughtful gifts from all, for the baby and even for me- guess which book- Bringing up Vasu!!

I was sorry that I could not get anything for all the kids but I did manage to go eco friendly with the bag from Small steps- an interesting initiative. Anush insisted on giving the gift as soon as the guest gifted her or Aditi.

Anush was so taken up with Little Buddha that she told Lavs they could exchange him for Aditi. Broke my heart a little .

But later that night she told me that no one should take Aditi.:-))...in keeping with two earlier instances when she shed tears when our driver and a friend asked if they could take Aditi home with them.

Anushka's Birthday Update

Unlike last year, we celebrated Anush's fourth birthday only in the new place this time.

Navy and I put up the props early that morning- a mix of Finley Fire engine ( Anushka's latest idol) and Cars.

The activity corner included car coloring and a jigsaw for Anush's age group and stacking cars for the tots. We also hired battery operated vehicles- a car and a jeep from Toysdayout ( a brilliant concept, definitely new to Chennai I think) This turned out to be the most fun part of the evening. Just to keep out unwanted party raiders, we gave tattoos to the invitees which had to be shown to entitle you for a ride.

The eats were light - cholay chaat, wafers, thattai, jalebis and mango squash. The cakes ( a car one what else... and an egg less one) were courtesy Cakes and Bakes but not as tasty as the previous times we have ordered there. And yes there were chocolates of course.

The goody bag included car theme- erasers, stickers, mini car models. There were key chains for the slightly older lot. For the family, we had terracota horses /elephants and an audio cd of Anush's favourite songs with an introduction by her.

Despite the unexpected rain and the swine flu scare we had fairly good attendance. At least no food wasted! Some of the Chennai blogger friends came in as well- Indu, Lavs, Itchy, hastobeme and Uma. And some other friends who could not make it on Saturday turned up on Sunday!!

Anush was excited and delighted and that was enough to keep the wide grin on my face, though we both missed my father ( who is in Delhi) a lot.

A short message to Anushka- " These four years with you have been so much fun. We have grown together and you have brought new meaning and purpose to our lives. We love you just the way you are and wish that the next year is even more delightful - when we will see you blossom into an older sister. Am sure you will be a natural at it and will delight us with your Anushisms - a wonderful mix of wisdom, innocence and naughtiness. Love you lots Chinnu Chikki!"

Saturday Surprise Shower

What a weekend!!

The blogging gang had plotted with Navy and threw me a surprise baby shower on Saturday at my mom's place. Navy had managed to keep it a secret for almost 3 weeks!! I am sure I would have found it difficult for such a long duration.
On early Saturday, I was left wondering why Navy was not keen on the movie, why he had pushed his trip to his native place by a day, why my mother had this sudden urge to visit the organic veggie shop she vociferously dismissed the previous time, why Navy wanted us to visit the temple that evening . . .

Anyway as I entered our Velachery home, I noticed there were lots of chairs out and wondered who had come . And then I heard a lot of voices shout " Surprise!!!" i saw an assortment of little ones and their moms and a few willing hubbies as well!!

Lavs, her super enthu and participative hubby and LB, the tall and gregarious IBH, the gentle DC, mnamma with her movie star looks and newest baby, Kowsalya with Anush's "akka" Abhi, Timepass with her family- they had come over early and done up the hall with balloons etc.

The cake was cut, the snacks/ sweets eaten ( well more or less) and there was a lot of gup shup. All the gifts were beautiful including ones from over state ( Blore)

The wishes on the blog roll put together by Lavs, is something I shall treasure forever and hope the little one enjoys when he/ she is old enough to do so. Some of the messages were hilarious, some touching, some serious... Best of all was the feeling displayed of genuine friendship. I am moved. THANK YOU ALL.

We anyway visited a temple after all had left and later that night when Anush opened up the gifts and wished to know if "these are gifts for my baby?" . . .she is already possessive about the little one!

Very thoughtfully there were gifts for Anushka as well ....something i will remember for the future.

The glass bangles inspired by the Seemandham- Vala kaapu function were a very nice touch, especially since I had lamented that the second one does not seem to merit a function traditionally! Thank you - whoever thought of this! So I am already a fair mom now, Anush had a traditional seemandham and the new one has just enjoyed a most unexpected blogger version!

The New age Masketeers

Just in case you thought this is Venice- I understand it is very easy to think that what with salwar kameez being the new style statement there - these New age Masketeers are an all women blogger gang. We had another Blog meet in Chennai on Saturday.

Thanks to Kodi's mom being in India, itchy, crazymum, Lavs and me met up with most of the celebrity kids in tow. It was lovely to finally meet DC and Timepass who joined in.
Punch is the most doll like child I have set eyes on, with a very sunny disposition.
Vying for similar honors is crazymom's baby- turning into quite a lady.
Lavs LB was comfy this time and has really grown up.
Kodi was very collected and the Chennai Brat and Anush had a ball.
The celeb twins Ojas- Tejas were missed.

Cafe Coffee Day played venue and goodies happened- sun catchers and veggie miniatures, the masks you see, toy buses and crayons.

As usual I felt I had not finished a single conversation with anyone but I still had a good time.
And for those who missed this meet, I am sure we will do it again soon.

**********

Went to the Indonesian exhibition and picked up some really ethnic curios including a mask, a frog with an umbrella, a set of cats on a sofa and some coasters.

Also went and gorged at Ajnabee chat which is the closest to the Gujju farsaan shops in Mumbai with a Santacruz road side chat shop thrown in as well. ( Remember Apu- you introduced me to this place)

The Horror of touch

All of us know the Magic of Touch and on the flip side are more than aware of the horrors of unwanted touch. Today, November 19, is Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse Day. Says a lot if we need to have a "Day" like this.

I am sure abuse has been on for eons but we are more paranoid about it now.

We have lesser number of kids. So the attention is focused. But I am sure no parent wishes to compromise the safety of any of her kids, however many she has.

Many of us live in nuclear set up, implying that we use external help but on the other hand it leaves lesser room for incest - reports indicate it is usually trusted relatives who often cause abuse.

Whatever the possibilities, how better to help our kids face it that by empowering them, even at the loss of innocence. Better a bit of innocence lost than losing peace/ sanity.

" The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil but because of the people who don't do anything about it." -Albert Einstein

Talking of Children's Safety I was glad to see this write up in Young World here.

I also chanced upon a Tuli ( Centre for the Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Abuse (CPHCSA) CD with voice over by Revathy. I am a little hesitant to share it with Anush right away. But I have given her an overall understanding that if she dislikes someone touching her she should loudly say "Please do not touch/ tickle etc" and of course rules about strangers have been going on forever.

For newer readers, you may want to read the post I did a couple of years back on this.

On a lighter note, we had yet another bloggers meet thanks to Sue's visit and Itchy's coordination. IBH, Sue, Itchy , Subha and self met up for a cosy chat at Cafe Coffee Day, in the middle of a work day , no less. I also plan to be part of the mommy circle on gmail since I finally recollected my gmail password and have an active usable id now. Sue- I am awaiting the invite to the Book Reading club.

Blog meet and some more

This Blogger meet I was the first to get to with Anush- who was enthusiastic to come -cold, cough and all.

Then Sue who infact got this meet going, joined in with her adorable package of fun and pranks . He gave a couple of clues as to why Sue has such a fantastic body. ( keeping her on her toes)

Resourceful Minka made it after a smart parking move :-)

While we started out at the last blog meet venue at the Isphani centre- Coffee day- the din- oops - the music & conversation levels left a rather cramped feeling and quickly made us switch allegiance to the near by place- I do not even recollect the name- a Pasta and Gelato place with a kids corner and very considerate staff as it turned out ( since we created quite a mess)

Tharini came in with both the kids this time and they were a delight as her blogs indicate. I was amazed at how unruffled and calm she seems always.

Nisha brought her daughter along. The little one was so cute and a silent observer but completely surprised me when she ate the spicy chips.

Anush and Akhil seemed to enjoy the pasta and so did I.

When bubbly IBH made her entry I was delighted since I had been feeling like a giant among all these petite bloggers in Chennai - here was someone who was an equal in height. I wish I could have spent more time with her daughter and got to know her better as well.

Sue observed my footwear and my" corporate" handshake- more on those later.

Sue's father spoiled us by footing the bill and indulged us with questions on blogging and summed it up by saying it was a modern version of pen pals.

This blog meet also left me feeling I had not had much adult conversation. The kids remained the focus as expected and as is right. Maybe next time we shld go to a place with a play area- Vanilla place or Pizza Hut so that we have more sane conversation. But I wonder if that will be as much fun!!

Other highlights
I played Tug of War at our Corporate Sports Day on Saturday and as expected we won!! Could not take Anush along since she had a severe cough.

We had our first guests last night at the new house and we found it is a good place to entertain visitors. But we could not use the large sit out since the swing had just been polished that day.

More supermarket in Pallikarnai needs better service desperately. They have only one operational billing counter!! We saw a couple of non Tamil guys posing with cauliflowers and taking snaps- possibly to send home - to show they have been shopping and cooking!! Cute.

I wish I had attended this- a whistling competition- as a spectator- must have been fun.

Anush's cough is finally on its way out- it really has been troubling her a lot.

I got the new local registration number for the car finally - after 6 months and a few thousands more since the tax has gone up to 8% from 6% since June 2008. Irrespective of when you applied for the new number, if your registration is post June you need to apply the new interest rate!! If the RTO is negligent and causes delay, it still remains your problem .

Action Weekend

I had my first brush with how children can hero worship a cartoon. The event was sponsored by Nickelodeon who I am sure never anticipated this kind of crowd. We met Dora the Explorer- so what if she was a man who wanted burger and a bottle of mineral water when (s)he visited the men's loo..... Anush made it just in time to touch Dora's 'hair' and shake hands- we were strategically placed near the loo for want of space. That worked in our favour! I can't begin to imagine the amount of germs that could get transmitted from mascot clothing.....

I met celebs of a different kind- tharini, kowsalya, itchy, crazymom, and minka ! All for a few minutes of disjointed conversation since we had to rush off to see Dora! But I would not have missed this opp ever. No pics with me but I am sure you will see some on their blogs

We moved into our new home- finally! A few people passing by our open flat asked if it was a model flat!! I took that as compliments. Our builder also mentioned that we had done it up really well ( that I take with a pinch of salt - he may have been trying to smooth ruffled feathers:-))

Anush went back to school- Montessori -1. She missed her former adult-in-charge and ayah. She was a brave little trooper both when we dropped her and when i picked her up and seems ready to go trow to her beloved school.

But she had wept in class. I could tell from her red nose. My poor baby.

"Sightings"

Met Minka- this time a planned encounter with her adorable kiddo. Anush was rather quiet but he did enough talking for both- a real sweet heart. among other things, it was surprising for me that Minka and I had such similar tastes when we ordered our sandwich.

Saw Bhootnath which was a little senti post interval but overall a thumbs up from me. Not as sensitive as Taare Zameen par but it is after all about a rather indulged child. Has its share of fun moments...

Happy Mothers' Day to all.

We are getting good at these blink and you miss blogger meets at Chennai. Vivacious Sue was here from Kolkotta and Itchy, Sue and I ( with Anush in tow) met up at a coffee shop last evening. Anush missed Ojas Tejas but had a ball drinking her "frapper/ frappaid/ frappee" and eyed Sue's chocolate cake as well. Moms & Us

Edited to add

A few of the mummas and to be mummas of the blogging world in Chennai decided to meet last Saturday. All thanks to Kodi's mom who was visiting Chennai.

Itchy hosted the do and did not mind the mess left behind at her place by the little kiddos. This was despite the fact that only a few finally turned up- Kodi's mom and Kodi, Hastobeme and her son, itchy and the twins and Anush and yours truly.

The kids had a good time and Anush was talking about her new friends to her father much after the event.

Hopefully there will be better attendance next time ensuring an even more gala time. I shall post some pics post editing since some of the moms and kids would prefer anonymity.

Other than that spent the weekend- kitchen furniture hunting, another round of polio vaccine, typhoid vaccine etc. More on the visit to the doc next time.

Also had a great evening at the beach on Sunday with Anush who seems to love omlette frankies!!
