Vijay Supersinger grande finale was far from grand and what did they mean by repeating the same clip some 3 times in the beginning? DD was loud and there was no sync between the anchors.
Between Ajeesh and Ravi, I though Ravi was better but Ajesh won. Anyway if music directors/ talent scouts watch these shows, then Ravi and Ranjani both will get their glory someday.
Was very happy to see Jhalak dikhla ja III being won by Baichung. Yes, Gauhar was a better dancer of the 3 finalists but if dance is all that counts then it should have been Hard Kaur!!

Anushka's Appa's surprise
It is Navy's birthday today.
Last week itself the new clothes and the coffee mug were revealed by Anush, much to Navy's amusement and my mock chagrin.
Anush declared " SURPRISE APPA! Amma has got you a surprise. Come and see it"
Last year's trend of not gifting Navy any gadget or accessory continues....he has only himself to blame- he is choosy and I am not well informed- so could not get him any cool cell phone.
Anyway got him a good perfume- Anush placed a star sticker on the bottle and said it for her star appa.
His gang from office turned up, they amaze me, with candles and salad ( since cake would be anti diet) at midnight for a surprise. They had done this really cool poster.
Anush who had told her Appa the previous night that she had a surprise card made for him but would not show him since it would not remain a surprise ( you bet she is a quick half- learner) rushed in to hand over her card- rolled like a scroll- tied with a "band aid " ( instead of rubber band).

The weekend that was
I could not help recollecting the posts in the last few days about the have nots' attitude to the haves of the world- the resentment etc. At every level, Excess always seem justified to the haves and obscene/ extravagant to the have nots.
Well, we attended this really grand reception of a soap maker's daughter. They had a printed menu, a map to the area, various types of palmistry and astrologers (from parrots to tarots), play area for the kids including a horse ride, an entertainment program , classical instrumental music etc etc. Almost as large in scale as the one we went to at Erode.
Anush's exploits included the following- she managed to get the ring around the target a couple of times at the carnival corner much to the stall guy's delight and claps, got mehendi done and also danced away with the Mickey mascot there- yikes to the germs on the mascot's palms !
Went to Inox and to Mayajaal to find that all tickets were sold out. So sat down to Mamma Mia on a DVD at home. Watched it with my folks which is the best way to do this, given Navy's disinterest and ignorance of ABBA. Thoroughly enjoyed the songs and we sang out LOUD. It is wonderful how the lyrics just come back after all these years... and in any case Meryl Streep is enough reason to watch this flick. She has a MadhuBala like quality about her.
Other updates
Vanilla Place is conducting a workshop for kids (3-6 yrs) for a week during Navrathri Holidays. Sounds fun.
Story trails has a lot of stuff for kids for the holidays
Hippocampus may take in Anush now since she is 3 yrs old- need to check once again
Falguni Pathak was in Chennai. I am not sure I would have enjoyed it but Anush may have liked it there.
Planning an official trip to Mangalore mid week. Wonder if I can try and do Udipi while there.
Need to plan something for the long weekends in October.

Last evening was entertaining (at my expense)
When I returned home, Anush said " Amma what are you wearing in your ears- so silly the ear rings look!!!" She was in splits at her own comment.
Me" You know H akka gave me these ear rings?" ( that is the truth btw)
Anush" Oh. H akka gave you??? They are so nice!!! Wow!"
Introducing H akka- the new hero( ine) in her life. Move over Dora. This lovely cousin of Navy in Blore is Anush's current craze, at least when it comes to looks.
She just adores her.
She wants long hair like her.
She wants to wear nail polish just as she does
She was surprised to note that akka had to brush her teeth like her "mere mortals" parents
She corrected me when I mentioned akka was wearing jeans- "she is wearing pants amma".
Anush is courageous enough to even face " strange thaathas" when this girl holds her
But she could not digest the fact that akka was a doctor- she kept quizzing if she was unwell and had to go to hospital.
Manipulative that we are we coached the Akka and told Anush to keep her room as neat as she does, wear jeans/ pants etc like she does and eat healthy and well and not be scared of new thaathas.

A very typical and young love story handled in a refreshing and sometimes amusing manner, slightly irritating in parts, less of regional stereotyping and the " sati savitri" dialogues also are tempered down. But makes you wonder why the reel life pair did not click in real life.

Om Shanti Om
This is the most irreverent spoof of Hindi cinema with all its trappings. The makers did well on laughing at themselves. But you try so hard to recollect where you saw some scene's original that the joke is lost at times. On the whole entertaining, Deepika is breathtakingly beautiful but does not look fresh or innocent unlike in the Close Up ad. Shah Rukh is at his loud best. The sets and wigs are apt and Shreyas is endearing but under utilized.

Rather pretentious in treatment, this movie is also a tribute to the days of Raj Kapoor. Garish lipstick ( even Zora Segal was not spared), good bit of dancing, nice eye candy for girls and boys, this was a tale that reminded me loosely of Iyyarkai. which was a far more sensitively made film. Ranbir is like Mr Neetu Singh but has a gorgeous body and dances very well. Sonam is really elegant and sweet , they should have had a better debut.

Why?
I like Imran , Irfan ...Why?
All pathans who begin with 'I' maybe? Last night I found Imran so articulate and graceful in defeat in the twenty20 analysis. Among other things, he mentioned that temperament, talent and technique get displayed in diff measure in tests versus this kind of series where only talent is on show. Debatable but good food for thought!
Eklavya India's official entry for Oscars- Why??
I am not sure that was even among the best movies of the year though it had a good bit of India thrown in!! Why not some good Bengali or other regional language film...
I love reading Film fare/ Stardust on train journeys- Why??
It is utter crap and inadvertently funny and soooo verbose that it helps kill time.
Prashant won Indian Idol - Why??
Beacause no Amit ever wins it ( recall Amit Sana- he was miles ahead of Abhijeet). Anyway I think Prashant is way more versatile as a singer than this rather handsome Amit. BTW, Indian Idol results made front page news in The Hindu!!

Little round balls of delight!
PANI PURI/GUP CHUP/GOL GAPPA/ PUCHKA- call it what you like.
- The puri itself varies between different proportions of wheat and rava.
- As long as it is fresh and crisp it is acceptable
- The substantial part of the stuffing varies between black channa, kabuli chana, peas, moong, potato &/ or boondi
- The water of course could be tangy, spicy, minty, sweet or sour - as you like it
Any trivia on this?
Is its origin as romantic a discovery as chips or wafers which resulted from a chef who, in his frustration with a guest who wanted really crisp potatoes, went ahead and made wafers?

Babe Balan
I have always thought of Vidya Balan as a thinking actress in the same league as Nandita Das or Konkona Sen.
And then I saw the promos for Heyy Babby! Well, I guess I have to change my mind.
As she says in an interview, it maybe because " I want my character to come through and not Vidya Balan"
But what the hell! Even Smita Patil had her Namak Halal.

Miscellany
Oceans Thirteen beckoned us on Saturday-night show and my mother was not interested despite my rapturous descriptions of the gorgeous George Clooney and the pleasing Mr Pitt. So left Anush home with her.
Navy and I went for the movies. It was good "us time" I must admit. The movie was good as per me and very useless as per Navy.
We were on the Besant Nagar Elliots beach on Sunday and what a spectacular display of fireworks!! A mind-blowing ten minutes non stop - celebrating Radio One's 150 days and possibly Suchi joining them?
Went and indulged myself and amma ( and vicariously myself) at Fab India- though there is a predictability about their stuff, i find it really good. Anush kept going to the mirror and saying pretty!! She wanted to try on the outfits i chose for myself and said remove and tried to squirm out of her dress.
And yes, I also had Tibbs Frankie after a long time at Spencers
At home in Mumbai I found the picture on this post, when I was a little short of 2 years. Any resemblance to Anush?
Today i got back from Mumbai (another overnight trip) and Anush welcomed me with "supe chinger" instead of the usual shaka laka boom. My mother explained it was " Super Singer"- as you can see the entire family is hooked onto Indian Idol / Vijay Super Singer Junior
Then she was humming to herself C forcock, c forchalk
So i said A for ? And she promptly said Amma!
