Have you seen this?

With a lot of blog friends turning off-line friends, I realise I missed capturing this here.

My first bilingual picture book from Tulika is now available for sale.

It is intended for younger kids ( 2-5yrs) but being a bilingual it may appeal differently to the slightly older ones ( upto 7yrs) as well.

Indulge me- buy it, read it and gift it kids, schools, libraries.

You could build stories/ conversations/ kids drawings around it if it inspires you.
And do not forget to share them with me!

After Mister Muthu, this is my return to published writing.
I hope this book brings smiles and a few chuckles here and there.

Good weekend

Went for a Metro train ride and then to Nandos - not very apt for vegetarians I felt. Though their mocktails were great.

Took Navy to Little Italy for his birthday and we all had a good time.

Anush made a charming easter egg kolam - missed taking a pic of it.
We did a Treasure Quiz for the easter eggs the girls made with playdough.

Attended a Vallakaapu function with Aditi telling everyone there that she wanted to go to Chakum Chokum. Other than that time was spent chilling out in the pool and reading.

*******

Today summer camp began- Anush went joyously and Adi refused to go. And to think the plan was in fact to engage Adi!! She does know how to foil my attempts- the little adorable monster.

Left for tour this morning listening to her piteous chant " I want you, I want you, I WANT YOUUUUU!!"

City Slickers & Stories

Went to Chintamani again this weekend for more family time there.

We were stopped in a few places by protestors ( seri-culture min price related) and let go after some detours and some waiting. So a journey that would have been under two hours stretched to 3 hours but enriched us all the same.

The girls were real sports and enjoyed the lovely farms and hamlets we got to see.
More importantly Anush got a feel of bandhs, their motivation and so on.

These things make you thank God for all the many blessings you have. Touch wood.

****************
Missed the Kathalaya story telling sessions on Sunday, part of the Kathotsava 2011.

I heard positive feedback about the Ola and Geeta Ramanujan from a trusted friend.

Aha ! Oho!

Aditi's first attempt at art. She had fun. And I felt it fit right into the Rangeela theme at Artsy Craftsy. So here we go. The youngest member of the Artnavy family!

Spent time with the wonderful R&S family at Rangasankara. Anush managed to attend two story sessions. I was disappointed we missed Vayu Naidu. Till next time then!

Aditi had a haircut - I only let the parlour do it post their assurance that her curls will grow out again- wait and watch now... She certainly looks naughtier with this hair style.

Hear me out!

In our building we have a young girl who is hearing impaired.

She plays with the rest of kids. They speak in signs and smiles. Like Singing hands.
Everyone tries to include her without thinking too much about it.

It is often said that Kids can be brutal/ cruel even.

But kids are also really large hearted aren't they?

**********

It was the birthday of Anush's cousin, the inspiration for a book by an extended family member.
More on the book later.

We celebrated at the Indira Nagar Little Italy- AWESOME. Anush also made her own pizza from rolling it out to baking it ....

Kids Aha!!

You know where to head this mid July.
We are surely going to try this year though it will be a pity to leave Aditi behind.

What she did this summer...

Well technically she is still doing since summer is still on...
  • Sai Visharam, a beach resort in Karnataka
  • Chinatmani ( to be with indulgent grand folks)
  • Cubbon Park, Lal Bagh, Ulsoor lake
  • Stanley ka Dabba at the theatre
  • Green pocket ( at last)
  • A dentist visit
  • Some family dos
Need to go to Bangalore Palace sometime soon-  I have not been able to take her for this.

Summer surely has been with a capital S
  • Swimming - not been able to do much of late since the pool is in repair
  • Summer camp at Kids Kouch which included  key board, dance, story telling , craft and cooking
  • Swingers Dance workshop- which she thoroughly enjoys
Much to her disappointment, skating did not happen.

At home
  • (Cr)Art: Kolam from grandmas and Felt work with me
  • Hindi script by herself
  • Abacus - a bit reluctantly!!
  • Reading and being read stories
  • Globe hopping- using a globe/ atlas
  • India hopping- through dress up and discussion
  • Making cards for birthdays galore and writing notes
  • Helping in the kitchen- peeling veggies, juice making
  • Chilling out with her sister and generally being a kid- the BEST part

Oh yes, we paid off our house loan on flat no 2. Yipee to us. (Though we have a soft loan to pay off still to my dad :-) )
Time to  invest in Blore.

Overheard

Anush was telling Aditi that "....all human beings come from animals you know- ape- monkey- gorilla...."
Aditi responded with a quizzical look.

Anush explaining We are the world to an older  cousin-" There were many children in Africa who did not have food. So many singers sang this song....to collect money for food for them"

Aditi responds correctly when asked "What is your name?"
But she has the same answer when you ask for anyone else's name as well....

Anush wanted to preserve some discarded carton for her "important papers"

Nature Mania

Lalbagh it was this weekend. First time for Aditi- third or fourth for Anush.
We had loads of fun and I had not even carried  a ball with me.
Nature offers enough to kids to play with and their imagination adds on to the fun.

Went to the famed MTR for breakfast and enjoyed the Rava Idli but found the turning off of fans midway through our breakfast rude. If the weather had been better I would have lauded the same.

Toying with investing in a flat in Bangalore. But this time I am not going to go overboard.  The motto is going to be de-clutter. Because we are placing access and convenience over size and style, given the budget.

Here is the another bit of fun we have been having with colourful felt paper..

Fun in Devlok

Simply enjoyed reading the Fun in Devlok series by Devdutt Pattanaik from Puffin.

To say that Indian mythology is rich would be an understatement. My fondest memories of my grandmother are of listening to her much embellished tales about Hindu Gods, munching on her murrukkus. It would delight me no end, on occasion, when she introduced me into the story as a character.

Having said that, as a parent now I have some reservations on some of these stories in terms of the stereotyping they propagate and the relevance in our times. For example the King wanted a son ( though he had 10 daughters). It certainly does not fit in with today’s parenting style and lifestyle.

But no one can deny the wonderful lessons and meaning many of these stories have. Devdutt Pattanaik, a favourite in our household in his early days when he wrote books on Shiva, Lakshmi and Ganesha , has recently published his work Fun in Devlok through Puffin.

This series is a lighter, contemporary take on mythology- not to be taken lightly. Hidden are nuggets of wisdom and social consciousness, backed by fluid story telling.

There are three stories- An Identity Card for Krishna, Gauri and the Talking Cow and Indra finds happiness. You do not need to read them together or in any particular order. In two of the stories, the protagonist is a child of today.

Gauri and the Talking Cow
Gauri, a curious city girl on her first visit to a farm discovers how animals and the earth need looking after. She befriends a talking cow, Sweety and in the process learns a few stories including those on Surabhi, Kali and Gauri and Indradhyumana, a King who did not realise how much good he had done. And even offers tips on hair grooming to Goddess Kali!

Indra finds happiness
Harsha, a boy who feels he is the unhappiest person in the world, meets Indra and discovers the story of Vashishta and all the wish granting things possessed by Indra. He realises that true happiness comes from being contented. He also demonstrates impeccable behavior when he refuses to steal even at Indra's behest, rightly observing that even Gods could make bad decisions.

An Identity Card for Krishna

Anushka's favourite story was this one, where lovable Krishna Bhagwan dons a teenage avatar yearning for his first plane journey but stopped by an earnest security guard. Krishna's devotee, who reminded Anushka of her great grandmother, tells Krishna the story of Anasuya and the Ashwini twins, and why Rishi Chavan made a rule that all gods should carry a flag with their symbol- sort of like the ancient form of an ID!!

A wonderful introduction to mythology, in a contemporary context, you can see that there are multiple stories in each book. There is enough humour to engage children and the stories are interestingly illustrated as well.

A must buy for 5-8 yr olds! Aided by the large font size, they will find it an easy read and give you a lesson or two on not just mythology but also on values.

Save a Smile

I bumped into a parent and doctor on the flight recently who said "Let kids get a lot of touch at home from their parents. Daily. Especially from the parent of the opposite sex. Even mock wrestling, cuddling, whatever. Only then will you empower them and they can instinctively tell when it is good or bad touch." This I think is wonderful advice.

On the other hand, though maybe not that often, one hears of parents/ siblings/ grandparents being abusive. If that is the case, God forbid, your child is likely to sense it.

Do listen to what he/ she has to say. He has no one else to turn to.

Do not dismiss it though you may want to. Do not judge them. There is no room for embarrassment/ denial.

You are not the victim. They are. Please save their smile.

It is Child Sexual Abuse awareness month this April in the blogworld. Initiated by two well known and committed bloggers, Monika and Kiran, this has spread to include a lot many contributors.

I would like to link back to these two posts of mine as part of this initiative. I can only say better safe than sorry and it is never too early.

Celebrating Ugadi and Ganesha

I think this was the first time we were in Chintamani for Ugadi. Lots of new clothes, the cricket World cup final and food apart, we also had beautiful weather on one of the days and played a bit of badminton as well. This is the first time I saw a natural athletic ability in Anush. Aditi on the other hand is very athletic in general and was a naughty monster this trip.

We also visited a Ganesh temple in Kanipakam, Chittor district. Lovely idol, fairly clean temple but very commercial and very crowded. Excellent drive nonetheless.

Anush sets off for summer camp today , hope she & T enjoy it.

The Circus is in town and what wonderful timing!! Hope to go there with both the girls one of these weekends.

Cake Walk

Anush and her thaathu visited the 36th Bangalore Cake Show. Anush thought that the Taj Mahal hotel replica looked like a mosque and nothing like a cake.

She loved Humpty Dumpty and the treasure chest. Here are a few snaps clicked by her:

My father rightly observed that these exhibitions make one feel ..." we also have cakes" given that they are not exclusively devoted to the theme and have gone rather commercial with all sorts of random stalls.

While on cake, my mother made some delightfully yummy pumpkin- apple- orange cake.

Hear Ear!

We got Aditi's ears pierced yesterday. She cried a bit but not inconsolably like Anush had. Gun shots by the doc. No ear "wrings" or rings either. Only ear studs!

I recollected the trauma and nervousness we had been through during Anushka's first time.

Was sure I did not want the family achari doing it and that too on her star birthday which is next week.

Hopefully Aditi takes to the ear rings easier than her sister did.

And what did Anush have to say on returning from school and enquiring if we had hurt Aditi ..." Amma BUT she STILL looks like a boy!!"

Ride on

Anush is back to cycling her big cycle daily. She enjoys it. Made me wonder if it is time for Aditi to be introduced to her little car since the pram is in shambles.

Go here for my latest review at ST. - a real joy ride.

Star Struck

I used to enjoy the shows - Cosmos by Carl Sagan and Star Trek back in my childhood. My first planetarium visit had been to the one in Calcutta with my father. I still recall the wonder and awe it evoked.

Anush has been to the one in Chennai where she had been a bit intimidated initially and then enjoyed it. I took her to the Bangalore Planetarium yesterday.

We got to see the Wonderworld of Stars show ( English at 4.30pm)
While the show was informative and the voice over was clear and crisp, I think it would be nice to have shows more specific to younger kids and this one is apt for 8 plus onwards.

I was wondering- the sanctity of science is important , how about livening it up with a song such as Yeh tara woh tara har tara or some game ....

Also if there was more touch -feel -do kind of activity it will engage curious kids and let them participate. Maybe they do have them but I did not find any.

Anush is hooked on to the book we got on the Stars and Solar System. Though some it would be too much for her age, I indulge her enthusiasm and read her a couple of pages at a time.

The campus is green and lovely- they also have these HUGE conifers which seem to be barely managing to stay up

Friendly staff complete the package.

Like chox said, it is rather cold in there. I find this to be the case at most planetariums- the aircon is possibly set assuming full capacity in terms of audience??

For those of you who are interested there is Science in Action exhibition this weekend

Paranoid or Safe?

We had the year end and final review at Anush's school. No surprises. I am blessed.

I only hope that the school in Blore can build on the solid foundation this school has given her and also wish that it is livelier than the rather austere feel of this one.

The teachers and I had a debate on when is it the right time to tell kids about good and bad touch.

They felt we had told Anush too early, compounded by the fact that she is uneasy among strangers.

I say better safe than sorry. What do you have to say?
