Narrow Escape

Screech, swerve, swing, rush, zig, zag, drag, bump, thud...STOP.

We were on the Chennai Blore highway. We have been doing this for over five years now and have come to enjoy the journey a lot. This time, it almost turned out our Highway to Heaven near Ranipet.

We were to attend Navy's cousin's wedding. Very excited since I had got loads of costume jewellery and colour coordinated it for Anushka.

Suddenly out of no where, there was this truck with sharp iron rods jutting out which reversed on to the road. Navy tried to avoid it, the brakes did not respond quick enough and we swung wildly on the road before jumping half way on to the divider.

Anush was with my mother on the back seat. She slept through almost all of it.
Thank God for BIG mercies. We were fortunate.

Funny thing is I am not shocked and was hardly shaken except for a few minutes. I had my eyes open through out. My only concern was that I should not be a sole survivor.

Not a scratch on any of us or the car paint. But the car is more or less kaput on its belly.

Petrol on the the road and a crowd gathered to be a part of the " excitement'. Lot of unsolicited advice and some welcome help followed. A leather factory manager was very benevolent and arranged water, space for amma and anush to relax for a while and a taxi for our trip back to Chennai. The Highway patrol was also pretty efficient. Cannot say the same of the Ford tow vehicle.

So I lived to tell the tale of my FIRST road mishap. But there are a lot of things I need to do:
  • Fill in that eye donation form
  • Write in neatly all the insurance policies I have
  • Arrange all the property docs
  • Maybe even draw up a will or authorise some one to act on my behalf in case of need
  • Find ocassions to dress Anush up in all those new outfits and jewellery
  • Live and love life as if there is no tomorrow

Dear Art,

Am so GLAD that you, Anush, Art and your Mom are absolutely unhurt! Really, tho' I've only known you a few days and that too only thru your blogs.

Yes, we do tend to take the biggest things for granted, don't we? that we will continue living from day to day, safe and whole in mind and body....

Waiting to see the color co-ordinated Anush- bet she looks ultra fetching!

Art, stop thinking of such morbid things!
but sometimes i wonder if dying would matter so much if we didn't have our young kids to think about.
For whom we still have to make a life before we pass on...

Hey Art

Very glad to hear all of you are safe. My own parents and sis narrowly escaped from my entire family being wiped out from an accident not so long ago on 100 ft Road in HSR Layout in bangalore. And I am still shaken even though I live so many miles away and was not in the car with them.

Your list SO makes sense, everyone needs to be always ready. Best wishes and take good care

Have goose bumps after reading this. I can totally relate to the "don't want to be the sole survivor". like JLT said, death is scary after you have children because you do want to live to see them growing and want to be there for them.
Take care :)

car will take a while but we have all bounced back- well- more or less

Gosh, I was scared reading it. Most accidents happen not because of our bad driving but due to the negligence by drivers traveling on the road before and after our vehicle. I have done the first point in your to-do list. Last point has been our motto in life till date.

this is scary. post-kid you value your life so much more!

artnavy said...

u value the others' life- not really your own

namvor said...

what i meant was that you value your life more because it is important to the others (kid/kids)!
i was such a daredevil pre-kids. have so many kissas i would need days to list them all down. have totally toned down post kids :( bcoz i cant risk taking risks any more.
of course this doesnt apply in what happened to you. maybe there is a god watching over us up there after all.

That was a close one. Very happy to hear you all survived OK. Item 6 of your list is how I try to look at things. Life is too short to worry about the little things (and a few of the big things as well). The motto on my blog: Kal Ho Naa Ho!

after my first experience of this kind, i promptly made a will. :-)
