For those who asked about:
Silk saris - Apart from the big showrooms like Nalli, Kumaran, Rasi, Chennai silks, Hayagreeva there is Sarangi on Sterling avenue, Nungambakkam.
For women's clothing, there's BrassTacks on CPRamaswami rd.
Jewellery - Again, apart from the big ones that is GRT, Lalitha, Prince, Kirtilals, theres Rasvihar right next door to Sarangi.
They do have online stores now.
Expensive, but just check out the websites and I guarantee you will fall in love! http://www.sarangithestore.com,
http://www.rasvihar.com,
http://www.brasstacksmadras.com/
Eden, Mansukhs, Sangeeta, Saravan Bhavan - totally agree. Other places seem new joints, weren't around when I studied at Madras.. that was a decade ago, getting old!
Other favorite haunts were Shakes n Creams Adyar and the cutlet/masalavada joint right below it where you had to stand and eat on the roadside. And Gangotri for chaat. And masala kadalai from the vandis at Besantnagar beach!
Whew long comment sorry!
@Arundhati: Shakes n Creams Adyar! -- brought back SO many memories!
Sundari Silks in T Nagar and Rasi in Mylapore are the best for off beat silk saris
Nallis & RmkV are also very good, avoid chennai silks and Pothys
for westerns-
i love fashion folks besant nagar and just casuals in Sterling road apart from teh staple cotton world
for jewellery- trust only GRT and Narayana Pearls and Sukra for costume jewellery
will do a post on shopping in chennai
arundhati-
check out the CC series- "Juicy Chat" - u might like that
Thanks a ton Arundhati.
Ditto Chox.. Shakes n Cremes in Adyar brought back lovely memories.
Everytime I am in Chennai, I visit Manmandhir, Nungambakkam. But their saree collection is not as good as before..
