Child's play

Anushka during this Mumbai trip, took a fancy for Dora( i got her the book), my Tom-Playrail Merry go copter and a Chinese keyboard ( since my old Casio had stopped working)

She also enjoyed pallankuzhi- an Indian version of chekers or ludo - my set is fish shaped and has shells for coins. Any of you played it?

Yes! Have an old pallankuzhi set from my grandmother- brass or copper or one of those. With conch shells(we also used those red seeds from Tata institute campus grounds sometimes).

Oh yeah! I still have my grandmother's pallankuzhi set. It is a wooden fish shaped one too. We used to play with choli (conch shells) or those ladybird kind of red n black seeds or sometimes with dried kidney beans.
Long since I played it though

Yep, yep, yep. I used to play with 'puliyankottai' (tamarind seeds). Used to suck at the game :)

We used to play pallankuzhi way back in 80's whenwver we visited grandparents house in a village in Kumbakonam. It was those classic wooden ones with tamarind seeds pulikottais. I enjoyed the games and wonder where it is now. Probably collecting dust in some room there. Other popular game was Dayakattai.

Those were very memorable years for me in villages in Kumbakonam, eat a lot, lot of sweets, mangoes, visit ancient temples, watch with awe buses coasting by, enjoy the recipes in mangalipondugals, play games..
