Ear Say

No teething trouble, No weaning trauma, No yearning cries. Just EAR RING Blues.

Anushka had poor luck with her ear piercing the first time- by the achari ( the ear piercer) on her Ayush homam. It was too low on one ear.

A little while ago we got it redone with a gun shot at GRT and she had on nice blue studs.
On day 10 we were to change the ear ring - the way she screamed!! It made us all go soft and weep with her. ( I know it sounds funny now)

A day or so later she managed to pull off one of them. Feeling very cruel some how managed to put in little neem sticks ( grandma's tested method) to avoid infection and until she( and I) was brave enough to put on earrings on her.

She managed well till yesterday. Last evening somehow she kind of snapped the twig on one side and kept fingering her ear and now it has become rather red.

I wish we had done it early when she was 10 days old or so and her hands were not so curious. Or that Anush was not keen on bangs ( bangles) and chains and ting ting tings ( ear-rings)

Know any Indian woman who does not have her ears pierced? Maybe Anush can set a trend. Except the earring industry will have to make more magnetic/ clip on earrings if her interest in jewelry continues.

Seriously, I wonder if it is really worth it.

I ask myself the same question, is it really worth it?
I have been meaning to prepare myself to get Ananya's ears pierced, I even asked a blogging buddy for some advice and gratefully lapped it all up. Right now I don;t think she'll be able to stop her curious hands from exploring but do you think it'll be better when she's 3? Maybe she'll understand that she shouldn't touch/play with her ears until they heal. I am still in 2 minds.

Interesting story. I had my ears pierced in my childhood and they got infected and blocked up. Didnt care until I got into college, when I realised I couldnt wear fancy earrings. One fine day, I heated a straight pin on the gas stove and pierced my ears myself. Dont have a clue how I did that, vanity above all...
Today I faint on seeing a drop of blood on my finger...
Let it heal and then do it when she's a little older and more sensible about not fingering it constantly..

If I have a daughter, I will not pierce her ear. It is cruel and has no real purpose.

btw, isnt it a female stereotype? Doesnt feminism to some extent try to get off this societal pressure?

(Never mind my ideologies, right now its all messed up :( )

Art - Ashu was always fiddling with the ear rings after her Ayush homam but after 2 weeks, they stop being curious. May be you can make her wear a ring which does nt come off easily. I got my ears pierced at the age of 10 after the first piercing at the age of 1 went awry so you can absolutely wait. Whats the hurry?

The kid - Boys get their ears pierced too at their Ayush homam. So the feminism bit does nt apply here. But Im sure there are loads of other stuff you can point your finger at for which we wont have any answer! ;)

Actually, in a way, ear piercing is even more unnecessary for boys, since they are unlikely to wear earrings, so its pain for no reason.

I am sort of very divided on this issue - I love earrings, so am glad my folks got mine done. But - should it be left to the child, and not get it done? Until he/she is 18 and chooses - a) if they want to wear earrings b) they can better decide if they can take the pain, in which case, upto them...

i think its completely unnecessary. I got mine done early (at the age of 5)and then got my foster daughter's done when she was 10 and desperate to wear earrings. She loved the idea of being able to wear the gold earrings that were bought for her.

My mom tells me that ear piercing is done to increase blood flow to the brain. Do not ask me how ears and blood flow in brain are related coz I do not know! It’s bad to see babies crying their hearts out after ayush homam. Thank God, my mom got my ears pierced when I was one year old. Had she left it until I turned 18, I would have stayed without getting them pierced. I just cannot tolerate pain!

mine were pierced at one and i fiddled and made a noise till i was shown the mirror and told i was looking pretty. apparently vanity overcame pain and i didnt touch it again. will be doing the bean's in another week or so. will tell you how that goes!

I had my ears pierced when i was 9. Had my daughter's ears pierced when she was 8 months and cried with her :( I probably wouldn't have done it but my sis-in-law insisted. S had a problem with recurring infections too - and I think it was because the studs block air flow and thus delay healing. When her ears get tender even now, I put in very small ear-rings and that ususally takes care of it.

I don't have any suggestions for how to stop Anush from fiddling with her ears. Maybe following what worked for MadMomma will work :D

sure, of course it will be worth it - when you find that absolutely adorable pair of jimikkis that go perfectly well with her new paavadai! at least thats what you shud tell yourself now. coconut oil helps heal faster.

havent got K's pierced yet, just didnt have the heart - but MIL is insisting that it MUST be done! dunno how I'm going to cross that bridge...

i guess i will use coconut oil and hope it heals fast and that the opening is intact

then if Anush is willing will put in a small gold ear ring and show her how cool she looks with it ( she is vain alright- for every dress change she will look into the mirror and say - naaiicee drech)

hope it all goes well and is worthwhile

thanks all for all the comments

aawww... I know the pain all too well, got my nose pierced three times because the location was not right according to everyone around me and finally ended up with nothing at all :(((... just let it heal and then decide, i think dangling ear rings and a mirror should do the trick.. good luck.

OUCH!
Stop the torture, indeed and let her set the trend. She can have press ting tings forever. I am sure the jeweller will make them for you?

My heart went out to little Anush seeing that first ear piercing pic of her. That traditional method of piercing would surely have been so painful. But seriously I don't think it's a big deal, you can let her be the way she wants right now and later on whenever she feels the need and wishes you can get it pierced. I got Ina's ears pierced by gunshot at 28 weeks and she still wears the small stud. I was against that traditional piercing for her and I was ready to even never pierce it at all actually. But she hardly cried when she got the gunshot one and within 5 minutes she was alright. She never really meddled with it and I never had any trouble with her pulling it out or injuring herself. Hangings ofcourse are a definite no no for this young age,but small studs can be allright. Anush seems to have had a rough ride with the piercing, just go with the flow.
