Multitudes of us, children of the patriarch, their kids and in turn their kids, congregated in the lovely village town of Lakshmipuram near Kuppam, this weekend. We drove down on the same highway where we had had that nasty accident last month. Rites of passage...
Around 70 people in all. Celebrating the past, it almost acquired a joyous dimension with all of us together, eating, praying, yakking, singing, playing cards....
It is ironical that something as sad as the passing away of a dear one, over time, turns into an occasion of sorts that unites and spreads joy in a family.

yeah, it is lovely to gather together.. we have a similar ritual, every year for karkidaka vaavu when we offer prayers and food to all our ancestors. Each person brings something, and we have a grand feast, and talk and talk and talk and laugh and laugh and laugh...
yes, it is true..these ceremonies are also opportunities to meet people you have not met in ages.

The death of a grandfather can be taken in one's stride although he will be sorely missed.I remember the death of my own grandfather and what with all my uncles and aunts turning up it was a kind of get together.The death of a junior member while older people are alive is a different story-God forbid.
Such few occasions where the family can gather - one tends to make the most of them - no matter what the 'occasion' might be.
