Eggsotic Banana Fest

We witnessed a rath yatra like a Tomatina fest , devotees ( teenaged boys mostly) were pelting bananas at the chariot, some even managing to land them on the top umberella! Aditi said they are " naughty boys" to be flinging anything other than a ball. Some lessons are well learnt.

Our apt housekeeping does not disturb rangolis till i smudge them up a bit at least. So got to take this snap of Anuska's handiwork.

Does zero comments mean zero readers? Apparently not as per statcounter. But still a few comments would not hurt me. Are you LISTENING?

Come over!

A fun weekend spent chilling out, with the highlights being a Grihapravesh function and loads of shopping to revamp Navy's wardrobe.

Other than that am pleased to have brought this this well known writer on ST

Since when did obedience become the epitome of good parenting? This article was sent over by a long time visitor to this blog. Asking for my thoughts.

I realise I do not give parenting much thought. It is what I do. Like breathing. Sometimes like what an Art of Living session does to your breathing, this article made me think about my parenting style.

Overall I think my prime concern while disciplining is the health and happiness of my kids. And that they do not cause anyone else harm. Not what others will think of them if they misbehave.

Intentions are important. For instance, if they drop something accidentally, we do not reprimand but might ask them to help clean up with us. When the act is done intentionally, the response is certainly different.

The child's basic personality also takes over irrespective of the upbringing, better to work around her style than expecting her to understand and follow you / sibling.

While we treat them right and reason out to them as we would to an adult, with firm politeness, I would be most upset if they began to behave like mini adults. But I would also not like them to be brats either.

In art, there is a school of thought - let the child explore..... do not confine them to boundaries. Say no to colouring within lines. But someone has to show how techniques can be used, how colours can be mixed, what are the possibilities.....

Similarly explore but without causing harm even in behaviour. Hence the need for discipline. Disciplining style of course matters and quantum as well.

A wise lady once told me choose the fights- don't say no to everything you disagree on. And any no has to be followed by an explanation. I have sometimes yelled" DON'T SHOUT!!" only to wonder what kind of example am I setting.

Being reasonable at any age is not easy if what you WANT is different from what is EXPECTED of you.

And finally follow no one else's rules on parenting, it is just what works for you as a parent and what helps your child.

What is this life

if so full of care........

I do feel that way when two little "supposedly ill" monsters have bunked school and are at home and I am inside at office( even if it is a home based one)

Maybe I am lucky I am not travelling at least today.

Two more book sales- Butterfly and Strand are here.

Therapy

The Retail kind

Went to Samarkand a few days back. Good kebabs, but most of the unique items such as Baklava were not available. Khyber in Mumbai and Kabab Factory at Chennai get my vote over this.

Mc flurry our favourite dessert on our tight budget Europe trip had come to India but is not as good as the memory.

Maiyas has opened a snack branch in Indira Nagar

Went and got some cool traditioal outfits for the kids and did I mention T To teens in Ulsoor. A good place to shop.

Anush made some lovely greeting cards for school from some stuff from etsy and her own ideas.

And Music Therapy

The Airforce Orchestra will perforn at Manekshaw grounds on 29th again.

Dhobhi Ghaat/ Washermanpet

Here is a pic from the Chunchi fun:
Really indulged ourselves with all the goodies yesterday- 3 types of kozhakottais, 3 types of vadas and a grand meal. Today we had starting trouble in the morning- something rather unusual in this household.

Where more is more!

Got the Puffin book Where's Hanuman? By Alister Taylor and illustrated by Christopher Woods and Ben Mc Clintic. Ironical that there is no Indian on the core team, though it says assisted by Krishan Das and Manideep in small print.

It captures the broad storyline of Ramayan and is stimulating and well suited to being a Diwali gift. Rich and tightly packed illustrations guarantee that the reader/ player is occupied on every page. There are also 'winks' - unexpected elements such as beach balls, tennis racket, sunglasses...

There a few characters/ items and of course Hanuman himself listed out to be identified on each page of the book. But you can make up your own Spot Me If You Can versions and play with a timer. More is definitely not excess here.

One instance-
We were looking for a mouse.
Anushka says" We need to look for cheese amma. That is where the mouse will be"

Questions

Saw the beetle/VW yesterday in Chennai. Immediately reminded me of Herbie and Lovebug.

An Anushism:
While playing doctor with her kit, she had a form to fill- she insists on asking the one on gender - she asked my father: "Thaathu, are you a man or a gentleman?"

Did you know that you get Madhubani and Warli art kits for kids?

Never say die

All about attitude- a friend just sent it and I was really inspired and amused.
Baby mosquito came back after its first time flying.
His dad asked him "How do you feel?"
He replied "It was wonderful, Everyone was clapping for me!"

********

While on attitude here are some very eco friendly activity books I recently got. Not just the content but even the paper is made from recycled fibre!! I found them in Odyssey. As I was browsing, I found this interesting site with my favourite bird on it.

Id lie

What would happen to a typical Udipi joint if the idli batter does not ferment/ rise by morning...

Would they not serve idlis that day?
Would they outsource and sell? In which case, they will purchase as FG- idli itself or the batter alone?
Would they give substandard idlis?

What do you think?

Answers stating that I have become mad/ velaa are not valid.- too obvious an answer !

Just for laughs

Summer in Blore is almost as pleasant as winter in Chennai!!

Go here for my review of a book that Anush and I like....

April 27, 2010

Last weekend

Cmani trips are filled with nature and fun for us. Anush enjoyed the scenic beauty and am glad she said she liked the hills as much as the sea side.

Anush was thrilled to contribute to the selection of colours for the Cmani house painting.
We also used an elderly tailor for her frocks
It is interesting how everyone knows everyone in a small place

*******

We had two get togethers - one set of Navy's school friends and another a set of very versatile ( mostly in writing/ travel) people. It was wonderfully stimulating.

*******
Saw a Prabhat circus on the outskirts of Bangalore. Anyone been there? I am a little anxious also if it is right to visit a  circus with all that one hears about ill treatment of animals. But I wish to grant Anush the experience at least!! What do you say?

BTW I am happy Chennai won the IPL- for the record. Let me see where my loyalties lie next season
