I am reading it now and was surprised to note this- of course RKN was referring to the latter meaning.

2. To utter suddenly and passionately; exclaim.

ReplyDeleteHmm....the word is used quite frequently in this context in older books, so no surprise there - I remember it in the Chalet School series, a lot of Heyers etc.
