Since when did obedience become the epitome of good parenting? This article was sent over by a long time visitor to this blog. Asking for my thoughts.

I realise I do not give parenting much thought. It is what I do. Like breathing. Sometimes like what an Art of Living session does to your breathing, this article made me think about my parenting style.

Overall I think my prime concern while disciplining is the health and happiness of my kids. And that they do not cause anyone else harm. Not what others will think of them if they misbehave.

Intentions are important. For instance, if they drop something accidentally, we do not reprimand but might ask them to help clean up with us. When the act is done intentionally, the response is certainly different.

The child's basic personality also takes over irrespective of the upbringing, better to work around her style than expecting her to understand and follow you / sibling.

While we treat them right and reason out to them as we would to an adult, with firm politeness, I would be most upset if they began to behave like mini adults. But I would also not like them to be brats either.

In art, there is a school of thought - let the child explore..... do not confine them to boundaries. Say no to colouring within lines. But someone has to show how techniques can be used, how colours can be mixed, what are the possibilities.....

Similarly explore but without causing harm even in behaviour. Hence the need for discipline. Disciplining style of course matters and quantum as well.

A wise lady once told me choose the fights- don't say no to everything you disagree on. And any no has to be followed by an explanation. I have sometimes yelled" DON'T SHOUT!!" only to wonder what kind of example am I setting.

Being reasonable at any age is not easy if what you WANT is different from what is EXPECTED of you.

And finally follow no one else's rules on parenting, it is just what works for you as a parent and what helps your child.

Year of Dinosaur .......not Dragon

I was just telling Anush the myth behind the Chinese custom of naming the years after this animal and that.

Was amazed how she immediately noticed and asked " Why did they not say dinosaur instead of dragon, amma? All other animals are real...."

Another weekend at Chintamani- we went to Navy's school Annual Day and had SO MUCH fun. There were about 27 dances and a skit. I had to prevent myself from getting up and dancing along given how senior MIL is in the school!!

Was mighty impressed with the really decent moves the kids came up with even on some newer movie songs. A shop called Prabat helps on sets and costumes and some are bought by parents as well. Really grander than anything I have attended so far in any city.

Authors and Illustrators

Having had a short brush with being published, I can just about begin to appreciate the high of seeing one's novel released, seeing it on shelves, getting fan mail........

A couple of my ST friends already have a few books to their name- Meera and Praba have written Tulika's Dinaben and Pratham's Subbu the signal. Here is another one joining the list. I met Lavanya, the illustrator of DC- Mango 's Tara Tambe, Forest Friend in Mumbai. She has done colourful illustrations which truly enliven the tale of how an obnoxious child turns into a friend of the forest animals. The book is ideal for kids aged 6-8yrs.

Am currently reading The Reluctant Detective by another blogger Kiran Manral. The first chapter itself had me in splits, with the gems of self deprecating humor that are woven in by K or should I say Kay.

Completely admire these ladies l! Keep writing and I will keep reading.

Weighty Matter

As we took a walk in the market street, I tried to explain a non digital weighing scale to Anushka from a distance.

The indulgent banana seller called us over ( I promptly admitted I was not carrying money).

She let Anushka hold the weights/ place them and helped place bananas to show her how it worked. A practical lesson from a natural educator.

Kites, Kites!

Apart from new clothes, feasting and rangoli, Anush and Aditi flew kites and painted pots this Pongal.

It was my first real kite flying experience and I was hooked. Tugging at the string that seemed to be of steel the moment the kite reached a certain height- what a high!

Habba time

Benguluru Habba is here again and sounds pretty inviting. Though am not sure how much of Karnataka it actually reflects unlike the Chennai Sangamam. This seems like a more urban fusion fest.

There is a Kite Fest this weekend. Given Anushka's fascination for them I would like to visit here.

The Flower show will also come in the next week or so.

The Art on the Street show- Chitra Santhe is round the corner as well. But we will miss it this time.

Dancing to Kolaveri

As I recall, my first school picnic had been to Gannavaram airport and the Krishna river side near Vijayawada.

Anush had a wonderful time at her picnic at the Jade resort in Devanahalli. They seem to have eaten a lot as well as played a lot. She won some prize as well for one of the games.

The sore point-
She found it 'unfair' that her team got Kolaveri Di for the dance session they had! To me Kolaveri is a catchy song though some of the words are not okay for kids, but if they don't get the meaning and only use it while humming the song, then I am fine with it. I was surprised that her entire class ( as per her) did not find this song to be a likable dance number.

As some would say, "Good taste-u di" !

Chilled out

Anushka is out on her first school picnic today. Hope she has fun given how excited she has been about it

I am Kalam was a lovely movie we saw last night. A realistic movie with a hope filled end that leaves you feeling warm.

My cousin N and her mom, my aunt were here for a few days and it was wonderful to see the kids bond.

But I actually went through two very comfy interactions to close and to open an account with an MNC and a local bank respectively.

My little cousin is a young lady now, doing great at academics, athletics and music ( piano).

Anushka is inspired and Aditi is besotted.

Girls day out

I took the girls to Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 at a nearby theatre and enjoyed the time out despite having had reservations against the movie choice.

Aditi was not a bother at all and laughed with Anush whenever she did. Very cute indeed. The girls were diff in their choice of popcorn- Anush loved the caramel one as usual and Aditi the salted one calling the former gandhaaaaa popcorn!

Did I also mention the Claytopia outing we had with lovely bloggers S and S of Artsy Crafty.... got some gorgeous gifts as well from them.

Hello 2012

Opened the new year in Chintamani. Came to Bangalore, enjoyed a Dhaatu Ramayan carnival though not in enough detail. They had colouring, puppet shows, a walk through cubicles like sets, play acting, quiz, etc. Really a lot to take in, in the 2 hours we spent there.

Some Adittys to begin the year with a smile:
She sees an Oonjal( joolah) photo in a wedding photo album. "Amma where is slide? " she asks.

She wants the straight hair of a cousin and points to her own and says "Amma take off this, give me that!"

Tata 2011.

A full year, with loads of happy times and some tense moments.

Office

Won a couple of brands that have been on the wanted list for long. Handling more accounts. A trip to Paris that did not work out and one to Sri Lanka that gave my purse a workout. Had a lot of logistics glitches to sort out - SAPped out was more like it.

Family

Over all good times. Though we had a trying time when we discovered our cook was a thief and went through a couple of maid changes as well. All elders and kids with nagging illnesses this entire year but thank God only the cold cough types

Kids

Both enjoying their new schools, growing up to be independent spirited young ladies inbetween some cycling, keybaord, chess, cooking, swimming and just being kids

Navy

Going along, doing well, sometimes wondering what...great we cleared the housing loan, now let us explore some new stuff

Travel

A source of joy and aches as well- we have had a number of short trips ( Nandi Hills, Lepakshi, Mekedathu, Mysore...) and longer ones were the Sai Vishram beach one and the Badami Hampi trip. Sri Lanka was pure retail therapy for me.

Blogging/ Writing

Mister Muthu comes to an end, as does TON. Story telling sessions made a strong start. Hope to see more of that in 2012. Lots of blogger friends made and fun meets had. Going fairly strong at ST...

Self

Inching slowly towards a fitter me. Finally.

Aditi's first train journey led us to a great trip. We spent Christmas weekend at Hampi, Badami and Pattadkal with our close family friends. Aditi and her friend were very entertaining and Anush and her buddy were on great behaviour having fun only as little girls do and imbibing a bit of the culture.

We realised we could have included Bijapur maybe with slightly better planning. So for those of you who wish to do this, keep it in mind- 3 - 4 days and you can cover all the places, assuming you are willing to start early daily.

While most of what we saw in Hampi is covered in the earlier trip post, there is a new pin hole shadow in the Virupaksha temple and a new bell has been discovered and displayed in the Krishna temple. We caught the elephant bathing session, a road side mehendi, a lovely trinket- a 2 paise coin finger ring and also did the boat trip across the river this time.

There are buggies now in the Vittala area and the dust is really way too much if the kids are allergic. The musical pillars have been cordoned off to the public since the structure looks rather unstable and possibly due to some mindless people using sticks and stones on the pillars!

But somehow the old grandeur seems to have diminished or since it was the second time, was my memory larger than the real thing?

Badami was fabulous despite the crowds. The cave temples/ durbars were filled with stories. The smiling Harihara and the seated Vishnu on the serpent will stay with me forever. The lake nearby saw an indulgent lady let Aditi wash clothes with her.

Pattadkal is sheer poetry and while Aditi's nature call made me miss some of the guide's gyaan, just seeing all the structures left me wondering what great skill artists and masons possesed in the years gone by.

Apart from the Mango Tree ( still too crowded and poor service and great ambiance) Badami Court and the German cafe on the other side in Hampi are places worth eating at. Small and cosy eat was the Durga cafe by the Virupaksha. Apart from the usual suspects, Israeli and Tibetan food have joined the menu in most eateries.

We were in an adequate enough place called Padma Guesthouse. I was afraid of the large lizard that paid us a visit once ( almost like a chameleon) but otherwise it was comfortable with a homely feel.

What was saddening is the brewing issue of the proposed dislocation of the smaller shops/ vendors/ autos near the bazaar to render a pristine historic feel to the place. While there must be another side to the issue some locals mentioned it is the vested interest of the powers that be. Here is a piece on that if you are interested in knowing more.

Enjoy the stress busting squishiness of the dough

Pat it and treat it with love

Use the rolling pin for what else- rolling

If the roti gets stuck call adult to rescue and dust "powder" on it

Meanwhile

Ask all to see,

pose for photo,

refuse to give pin- stone back

Give roti to be put on tava.

Then gracefully feed all in the family with the roti, but decide you will not risk eating it yourself

Earn a testimonial from paati and have a post done on it for your future reference.

Mumbai Dost

No. Not the Gay one but a happy one all the same.

Was in Mumbai yesterday. Apart from work, got a chance to meet my best friend from college who happened to be in Mumbai as well!!

What fun it was and I am glad that it is never difficult or awkward despite the long gaps ( this time 3 yrs) between the times we get to meet.

Joyous Weekend

We were at the cake exibition - some were really not upto the mark- only to the cynical adult eye in the family- eg. the Metro train set while some of the wedding and fair theme cakes were lovely and delicate. The main piece was the Gol Gumbus which was large and imposing but seemed to be missing some minar tops which we saw lying on the side.

We visited the Leela Palace hotel and Anush was enthralled by the Christmas tree, and less so by the gingerbread house.

We were at Chintamani for Sports day at Navy's school and watched the Asia champ in yoga, a class 10 student, perform some really complex yogasanas. Aditi entertained all unexpectedly by trying to mime the drills and exercises.

And if all that was not enough, we also enjoyed ourselves at the Carnival in a friend's apartment.

Parenting tale

Being a mom teaches me so many things. I am not always sure what I have learnt but I still feel a bit more grown up/ wiser at the end of it.

I was pretty good at reciting poems in my school days. Both memorising and the drama and pauses that come with it. Anush had a poem to memorise and recite a couple of days back at school.

She memorises pretty quick but the rhythm and intonation seemed too sing song/ nursery rhyme like to me.

I kept pushing her to do better and then after a point she declared that she did not want to recite the poem at all, ever.

I did not debate it and was mortified. I tried and distracted her completely successfully after that.

The next morning I just suggested that she enjoy and feel what she is reciting and have fun with it ( yes, I can be pretty persistent) but then I laid off after that.

Here is an Inetrnational Film Fest at our doorstep....hope i can see some at least.

Anush spontaneously recited the poem as we sat there drinking coffee, once again as Navy woke up, yet again as we waited for her bus and did it with such aplomb !

But yes, it is as important to back off as it is to guide.

These are growing young ladies we are talking about, after all!

Namma Bengaluru

Sibling Squabbles

Aditi fights over books/ toys/ her amma/ her appa/ plates/ spoons/ band-aids/ etc etc

But she also showers lots of unconditional love, supports Anush when she is being reprimanded, misses her terribly when she is away, apprecaites any art/ work by Anush, shares even the smallest bit of sweet/ fruit with her.

This is all new to me having never had siblings....Shine on my girls and show me the way!

We managed a visit to the Spaghetti Kitchen and loved it. Must try the pizza there- a real cracker!

Lamps galore

Anush and her friend had a good time together and here is a pic from our Karthikai clebrations. The treats turned out truly yummy ( appam, sweet porri and adai). We also burst a few no-noise crackers and Aditi has really begun to enjoy them.

Aditi loves wearing dupattas on any attire and yesterday managed a click of hers in this cute outfit without one. The outfit is courtesy S's mother. Send in your orders to S if interested and also here is another organic cotton bag from the NGO they support which I really liked.

Went to Cake wala and was delighted by the spread and the prices. Not as yummy as Merwans, Mumbai but getting there and a lovely display to actually watch the master baker/ cake artists in action.

Missed meeting M from Chennai who was visiting Blore since all at home have been rather unwell.

But met two good friends ( both from our alma mater) who dropped by at home. Great to see the kids bond as always.

I went to take a quick peek at the Strand sale and forgot to buy the book I most wanted- one by Sabuda!!

We went to Kala Madhyam at Chitra Kala Parishat . Picked up a variation of Warli called Chittara. Most of the stuff is made up of the regular suspects but some of it was enchanting.

Was in Mumbai and Delhi on work and got to meet my cousin and Chithi. Ate saag and enjoyed Gobi parathas one misty morning.

Last weekend, went to Chinnari Habba and saw the (z)orbs that I had always wanted to . Could not do it due to the queue. Anush did have fun with a horizontal bungee though.

Or shld I say Episode......Mister Muthu and Times of Nishka, the monthly serial stories I have been writing for Chandamama, end this month. ( after over 2 and 1 yr respectively)

Chandamama was a wonderful experience for me as a freelance contributor, be it
- the letters from kids from all over India,
- MM being on the magazine cover,
- having book label stickers with MM alongside the iconic Vikram & Vetal
- or featuring prominently on the index page ....
all have given me immense satisfaction.

Thanks Visitor( wherever and whoever you are) and GB my first editor for seeing and believing in MM.

I will miss you Mister Muthu. You will always be my baby.
Though readers will possibly see him authored by a different person since he is now the property of Chandamama.

Little Buddha and a Lamb

LB came to town from Chennai this Saturday and we had loads of fun with Lavs, S & S, Poppy, Starry and kids. The hubbies hit it off too.

It is certainly warm and nice to see online friendships turn real and endure as well.

Went for a birthday at Gerry Martin Farm, great fun as expected. The baby lamb, baby rabbits and the duckling were the most delightful. Anush enjoyed some potty humor after witnessing the Emu and donkey and goat do their job in full glory.

We went to a nursery run by APD that completely delighted us at Jeevan Bhima nagar.The endearing staff also makes giftable items like chimes and paper quilling which are very pretty.

Appa scold you!!

" Aditi feed you", meaning she wants to feed herself. It is difficult when what she is eating is pretty appetising.

When I was young....

People often say that their childhood was the best time of their life.
Though I was not a depressed child, I cannot claim the same. My childhood was good but it was also an awkward and insecure phase.

As I recall, I have always strived to enjoy life all the time, at any age. So there are a lot of good memories and some tough ones.... what about you?

Anush at her school fancy dress- she WANTED to be a Kashmiri ( easy kid isn't she?)
She sang and danced to Bhoomro ( Mission Kashmir) and stated some facts on the beautiful state - about saffron, apples and chillies, lakes and mountains and the Santoor.

She also went into the final round of the music competition singing Achutam Kesavam.
Final Verdict not yet out on either but she HAD FUN.

A couple of family functions and traditional meals to enjoy.

Anush and Navy saw Suar chala space ko while I chilled with Aditi in the lovely Rangshankara cafe and book store. The counter lady from Gilogilhari gave her a lovely takeaway mini handfan. Small and unexpected perks!

My mother returned from Mumbai with a whole lot of goodies for the kids and her big kid as well.

My father went for the Hindu November Music fest and liked the Balkan show the best.

Yesterday was Karnataka Day. Took off since the rest of the family had off.
Did general spring cleaning and chilled out. So much fun!

The Saffron Tree fest- CROCUS 2011 - comes to a close today. Do visit a review and interview I did with a very interesting illustrator from the UK.

Went for the Airforce Warriors' performance and got drenched in the rains and in the patriotic fervour as well. The girls loved it. Will positively go again whenever they play next.

Navy and I saw Velayudhan, a typical Vijay movie, time pass though a bit gory. But it was nice to go to a movie alone, without kids, after almost a year.

Medici, an Italian restaurant in I Nagar, live up to what we had heard.

Will again give the Hindu November Music fest a miss but those who do go- pl update me.

A Happy Diwali Indeed!

We had a great Diwali though kids again had cough.

Went to Chintamani for a day trip and also celebrated with family and building friends in Blore.

Navy bought a larger plasma TV and he got me a Blackberry Bold as well. First time I recall us timing such purchases with Diwali.

Aditi loves to say" Pataassss!!" She was fine handling sparklers.

Anush actually lit flower pots and chakras herself this time with me overseeing of course.

We enjoyed the terrace view of the fireworks in the city skyline.

Kala tikka. My grandma with my kids.

Dressing up, rangoli, murukku, diyas, sweets all happened with much gusto.

Pink and Blue brand of ghagras for kids are nice. Easy on the pocket too.

Aditi at 25

Aditi has taken to singing to herself big time.

She is also an enthusiastic Happy Diwali 'wisher'

She has spontaneous bursts of affection where she half strangles you with her hugs and kisses and declarations

She is really manipulative with her well times sorrys and thanks

And the last two days she has asked to be taken to play school, contrary to the usual hell she raises to go there. ( though she does not even turn back once she is there)

She also has begun dressing up and preens in the mirror at times.

She is 25 months old today.

Yesterday it showered water related stories and today it is fire that is sparking up tales at Saffron Tree.

A (no)cracker of a Diwali?

Standard fireworks have stalls in large grounds all over the place.
Went and picked up some non noisy crackers. Though it amounted to a lot of money

Am unable to imagine a cracker less Diwali though it might be the more eco friendly option.

Would you refrain from buying crackers completely?

The Retail kind

Went to Samarkand a few days back. Good kebabs, but most of the unique items such as Baklava were not available. Khyber in Mumbai and Kabab Factory at Chennai get my vote over this.

Mc flurry our favourite dessert on our tight budget Europe trip had come to India but is not as good as the memory.

Maiyas has opened a snack branch in Indira Nagar

Went and got some cool traditioal outfits for the kids and did I mention T To teens in Ulsoor. A good place to shop.

Anush made some lovely greeting cards for school from some stuff from etsy and her own ideas.

And Music Therapy

The Airforce Orchestra will perforn at Manekshaw grounds on 29th again.

Diwali Streamers

Apart from coluring a dozen diyas or more, this time Anushka and I worked on a lantern streamer

And my father had managed to light each one up and it looks really gorgeous at night.

Challenges and Contests

Anush has learnt to cycle without the safety/ side wheels. All thanks to her Thaathu. And her own persistence. I feel immensely relieved since I never learnt to cycle.

As per her worksheets, Anush did extremely well in Hindi as well this time.
She did miserably at a quiz in school but was not miserable about it. Thank God.

I usually stay away from contests if I even remotely feel the need to win. I participate if I know I am not going to win but I will have fun at it. Absurd? Go figure.

The loveliest Golu ever

Went for the Dhaatu Golu and was completely mesmerised.

The collection is enormous in any case, but the details and the themes are wonderful. The Abhimanyu in the chakravyuh was the most enchanting in my opinion.

Wish they had a guide for novice collectors as to where to source dolls from .....

One pointer was the Govt marriage hall like place in Parry's - any of my Chennai friends pl go there and let me know.....

In Chennai on work. Met zestful Uma of Adya fame and again amazed at how much she can fill into her day and life. She indulged me with craft material for Anushka and golu dolls for the coming year!!

There are many get well soon, welcome home cards that keep happening at home.

She did these as farewell cards in her Montessori school

She sketched and coloured this herself for Krishnashtami ( inspired by Ghee happy)

I have begun exercising. ... yet again.

Yet I felt a strange emptiness - and no it was not due to hunger.

Golu 2011- The Finale

And so the festival draws to a close this year. We made a small beginning last year and took it to a larger scale this year. However it remained simple....

With a mix of kitschy dolls and also knick knacks from across the country which are part of our regular decor as well.

We had guests galore and some were generous with their time and some with their skills.

Next year, maybe we could do a theme and create one scene/set possibly. Completely inspired by this gentleman's work .

Akshar Abhyasam

We celebrated Saraswati puja yesterday and Anushka was proud to make her mother sing at some of the golus we visited.

Today is Vijayadasmi. A few years back on this occasion, we had Anush's Akshar Abhyasam. Given that the child is interested in writing and the written word, we plan to use the same attire on Aditi this time for her Akshar abhyasam ! ( not to mention I forgot to reserve any new outfit for today)

Aditi speaks a lot like most kids her age. She likes to pretend read and enjoys painting/ messing about. S will recall how she kept asking her to" Aditi read" (meaning Aditi wants to be read to)

Never seen her " write" so far though she loves to doodle.

As if she understood the significance of the event, my MIL found her "writing" something with her finger, on a paper, soon after her playing about in the rice grains.

As usual Anushka's typical question" Why can't Amma teach her to write? Why should only Appa do it?"

Jungles and Movement

Our building gardener gave us a patch of his lawn grass and we used it for our animal kingdom. This is one grassland where wild and domestic animals live together. Possibly because they are all the same size!!

Anushka's train set and Aditi's cars became a lively side piece. From my collection a vehicle mobile added a touch of Indian rustic.

Ram- Sita- Lakshman- Hanuman. Had some trouble deciding how to place them. Instinctively felt that Hanuman would not be near Sita. Saw some calendar art on the web and decided to go with this placement. Though traditionally the wife stands to the husband's right.

A Starry Day

Had a people and fun filled weekend. Celebrated Golu and Aditi's star birthday yesterday with family and a few friends.

The cake followed a Dassera plus birthday theme- hence was festive with buntings and Krishna, Bheem and Chutki which Anushka decided was Aditi since Chutki would have been bigger.

Only downside, both kids have again got cold cough. We will need to recheck with the doc. And so our visits to others' Golus remain pending.

The other S and her kid A visited us from the blogsphere and we had a really good time.

Bring in prosperity

In keeping with this year's decision to cover various aspects of Golu here is another set of dolls - Chettiar Bommais- Prosperous elderly couple ( note the man is rather like a Laughing Buddha), we place 5 types of grains in front of them. Not sure what the usual composition of offerings is.

We cherished the visits of all who made it and foremost among them that of S of ST fame and her charming daughter A.

I have two sets of Marapachi bommais. This is the smaller, more embellished version.
I understand these dolls are critical to have in traditional Golus. In the days of child marriage, I suppose these dolls served as a reminder of her parents' place- these dolls were/ are usually handed over during marriage by mothers to their daughters.

Golu or Kolu or as the Japanese call it Hina Matsuri is here.
And my appa graciously sourced and set up a seven step stand for us to decorate.
So unlike last time, we have a proper stand and a larger surface area to play with.

Anush and even Aditi had fun unwrapping dolls, old and new. We set it up and the girls are painting a few earthen diyas daily.

In Bangalore, I am told Jaynaagr, Gandhi Bazaar and Malleswaram are best bets for Golu Bommais as is Mysore. Hopefully I get to visit one of them over the next weekend to add to the collection.

Here is Aditi's birthday in pictures:
Decor: Scrap cloth Bunting, paper wish bunting, tissue paper flowers, yellow balloons and flowers, yellow dress code

Food: Dhokla, Poha, Corn- pineapple salad, Popcorn, Gold fingers, Custard, 2 cakes( mango and duckie), juice, melon eggs and Tomato peel flowers

Clothes: 3 sunny frocks and one traditional one

Activities: Lemon and spoon, lion plate art, yellow collage with stickers, pin the tail

Gifts: The goody bag itself was a goody courtesy S and the NGO initiative she and her family support. Included wooden tops, smiley ball, Anushka's Puppets of India- a book and a golden yellow pen.

We also had a cake cutting session in school for Aditi, which her big sis attended.

Catching the Lion's tale

The turn out was much lower this time- only 7 kids and some parents!!

But the response to the stories was good and the kids were participative.

However one child got a bit scared at some point with the ferocious lion I had turned into and I had to tone down real quick to calm him.

I used lion and mouse finger puppets, a lion hand puppet as well as a net laundry bag as a prop.

Kajal whiskers and noses added to the fun.

Two cute Aditi!!

This day, two years ago, a small bundle was handed to me- so vulnerable, so innocent. We felt twice blessed.

There have certainly been moments this year when I have wondered what possessed us to have a second one.

But overall, Aditi- our bonda, our spicy, spirited, amusing, bright and sharp thing, you have been an adoring and adorable child, a loving sister, a naughty and mischievous grandkid.

You speak a lot, experiment with food, try to be self reliant, make friends easily, you have even begun going to play school with a smile. You have a sense of humor already and can be pretty playful with your answers.

Love you sweetie pie. You complete the family. God bless you with better health and a bit more patience this year and may you stay as chirpy, cheerful and bright as you are.

Sport of the day

Anush's first Sports Day and what fun she had.

She was pleased about everything, most of all with the silver medal and certificate in a Balloon race that was held. Despite her filling in the blanks (in a politically correct manner) that it was more important to participate and have FUN.

She had her first taste of a team rooting for her and was thrilled by the way the prefects showered accolades on her.

I relived my childhood when I saw the yoga and the pyramid builders.

The modern act with hoops was very enchanting and some of the kids were just flawless. Inspired, Anush has got one for herself to practise and perfect over the holidays.

Also very thoughtful was the inclusive way in which a boy with very obvious growth disability was an integral part of the event.

A spectacle of sorts

Once upon a time, long long ago, a young girl of ten was mighty excited. She lived in a suburb in Mumbai and was an only child. Her parents had taken her on a local train to Fort area to a large spectacle shop. She loved the train ride and the promise of the superb noodles restaurant and her favourite corn soup. She dismissed the newly launched Maggi noodles which was such a rage among her classmates.

After choosing a specs frame, the girl excitedly displayed her skills with the fork while handling the noodles in the restaurant and when asked by her folks, seemed thrilled at the prospect of wearing specs.

This girl grew up, got married, had girls of her own. By now she was wearing lenses.

One day, her older six year old accompanied her to the lens shop. On a whim, she got her eyes checked as well.
And it turned out that she needed specs.

A good four years before her mom had got them.

The young girl who was now a mother was almost distraught. She went back in time and realised how excited she had been about wearing specs.

She told herself that she was being a bit silly. While her mind said it was alright, her heart was broken. She had wished for the better eye gene from her husband to pass on to the kids.

But the child's excitement made her put on a brave face. But she knew it would get cumbersome, there would surely be unsolicited comments in store.

She tried to prep the kid and then realised it was uncalled for.

For now, the child is revelling in her new and cool accessory.

On a Weekend trip

Went boating on Ulsoor Lake, finally. Kids loved it.
Went to Chintamani and the kids had a lot of fun with rangoli on the entire courtyard.

Missed a wonderful Baby Shower for Aryan's Mom.

Am again contributing to The Book Review - children's issue this year. Last year was Swami and friends and Oliver's Diary. This year it will be 4 books I have enjoyed a lot.

Mister Muthu and Times of Nishka will conclude this year. Sent in the final episodes and feeling a bit nostalgic about the journey into seeing "my name in print".

Of Vertebrates and Carbohydrates

A mix up of the meanings of the two words in the title led to some fun last night.
And while we were laughing mercilessly, Anush said " Stop freaking me!"
She sheepishly apologised and said that she had heard the word from a classmate at school!!

Post that Anush was quizzing Aditi on what contains vitamins and what is carbohydrates and so on. Aditi was casually answering Yes and No.

Similarly with vertebrates and invertebrates.

By coincidence she got many right.
So Anush was gushing about how Aditi is sooooo clever!!

Happy Onam

Happy Onam!

We did a small pookolam with the flowers picked from our building garden and the girls wore their Kerala outfits ( from Fairico). Apart from pappadam and payasam, we had a regular meal.

And watched this cute video on Onam. Filled as it is with cliches, it is a good introduction to the festival for the kids.

School is cool

Aditi's review at school was very cool. She also seems to have been thrilled with the cake she took to school on Teacher's day.

Other updates :

She is now open to changing earrings and asks for it herself

She is also in love with paavadais and enjoys draping a dupatta on any outfit!

She sings a few rhymes and songs though she swallows all prepositions and conjunctions while doing so

I debuted as a story teller last weekend at Monkey Maze in Indira Nagar with Elefunt Tales.

A great experience and hopefully one of many more to come

Had an audience of about 25 kids and some parents

Did some elephant theme stories with a lot of Jeeva pointers sprinkled in and some craft

Cherry on the icing- 2-3 kids wanted me to continue and kept asking me for more crafts!

While on craft we went to this neo-rustic cafe called Chaipatty. Navy and I had opposite opinions on the food there. Pic courtesy Anush:

Vanished - here to stay!

Vanished by Sheela Chari, is a story about an eleven plus girl growing up in the US and trying to hold on to some of her Indian roots or as her parents suggest assimilate the best that both cultures have to offer.

The 'cursed' Veena, gifted by her grandma from Chennai, makes its way to Neela in Boston , only to be stolen. After some twists and turns, a close call at a train station included, she finds it and what she does reflects unexpected generosity in one so young.

There is intrigue, in chapels and music stores. There is a bit of gyaan on the Veena, a legendary curse and how marketing ploys work. There are well etched characters including friends both Indian and American. The Krishnan family sounds like one you know well. There is a quirky Veena teacher and a secretive classmate.

Without being judgemental, the author Sheela paints a picture of a (pre) teen's life in the US with first gen Indian parents. Her concerns about oiling her hair ( smell like a salad dressing) , her laughing at her mom's ' drishti' (nazar utaarna) ring true.

A scene that completely blew me away was when the usually irritable sister allows her little brother to listen to her play the Veena and he in turn inadvertently helps her get over stage fright, even if in a limited way.

A very interesting and fast read, I felt it would make a good movie. The cover illustration does not do justice to the Veena or the story in my opinion.

Happy Ganesh/ Vinayaka Chathurthi! Anush is holding the play clay one she made. Of course the one we bought is not colourful and is a plain clay one.

Ganesh has been the favourite Artnavy family deity. We have slowly stopped collecting idols for want of space and novelty. Time to revive our quest as Navy told me a couple of days back.

And i cant believe we are only one month away from Aditi's second birthday. Here is a pic for that.

She has learnt to say Namaste, counts well till twelve, tries to repeat any word in any language used, has specific tastes in clothes!

The Artnavy and the N family set out to Chunchi falls. It got a bit difficult to lug the younger kids all the way and did not seem worth the effort since the fall was not a spectacular one.

But we found a small gurgling stream and the children splashed and washed about and we generally had a ball.

We then headed to Mekedatu. The calm Arkavati and the rough Cauvery join here. We were thoroughly mesmerised by the power of the Kaveri in the gorgeous gorge and the lovely rock formations there. Specially how the water had polished the stones to a shine and the perfect holes and arches that the water had created over time.

And the coracle ride was finally done.

Went to ISKON Higher Taste finally and Loved the food. Wish they had some of the dishes one associates with Krishna like poha- jaggery and so on as well

Anushka wanted me to make Honey fried noodles ( darsaan) and I did.

It was a success and she wanted to carry it to school today as well!

In an unpleasant development, we found that some gold had been stolen from us as well by the cook. Most of it has been recovered by a very earnest police officer.

And Aditi got her first peek ( hopefully last) into the police station!! She kept on pointing to thaatha( Gandhi) and wanted to see his large photo from time to time.

Happy Janmashtami, Krishna Jyaanthi.

Anush was game to dress up as usual and Aditi was not, as expected.

We went to Cmani and returned early and were at Blore for the rest of the festive day.

This time Anush rolled the entire batch of coconut cheedais ( right extreme, below pic)and pretty well too. Amma ( with my able help!) made yummy appams and she made awesome kai murrukus (without my help)!

Here is Anush as Krishna. Though Aditi would make a fab one she just REFUSES to wear a feather or play act.

Since white footprints were not visible last time, we used blue ": The colour of Krishna" Aditi at first understood Kolam as " Cholam" ( corn) and was disappointed not to find corn!

Anush sang Achutam Kesavam and then I revisited a beautiful film song with the kids- Kanha bole naa....

Anushka's old school teacher called to wish her a belated bday as did an ex neighbour who has moved to Hbad. People can be really Nice!

Our evening roti bai/ cook ( for over a year now) was caught stealing jewellery at our friend's place. People can also be really shocking!

Chalo Dilli

Was in Delhi yesterday on work. And passed by the Consulates, Rail museum, India Gate, Akshar Dhaam, the JN stadium all on the way to and from the airport.

Ate a Rajasthani meal at a restaurant called Suruchi. Not bad.

Nowadays Aditi follows when I say I am going to XYZ on tour and says" Aditi XYZ" as though she would like to join me as well.

She had her vaccine today and did not cry at all!

Took Anush and her cousins for the Flower Show.

Felt that the flowers in natural set up ( both in the park and the show) were far prettier than the marriage -arrangement- like Bahai Temple and the very amateur Konark wheel.

We were at Chintamani for Independence Day and Anush and Aditi had fun at my MIL's school celebrations. Aditi also enjoyed the play park there. Will update pics from my MIL's cell sometime in the future.

This day, six years ago, I became a mother for the first time. It has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my existence. Thanks Anushka for making my life more beautiful in every sense of the term.

Here are the various aspects of her bday party which took place last Friday. We had a sea theme birthday only because it seemed easy and pretty and I had managed to find her a blue frock!

FOOD: Shell & Star biscuits , Goldfish, Pasta salad, Honey twists, Veggie Fish/ Starfish cutlets, Candies, Chocolates, Juice, Two tier marine Cake

GAMES: Fishing with feet, Catch fish, Short Treasure hunt, Ocean quiz, Burst the Bubbles, Shell strings, Sea collage

DECOR: Lots of shells, blue and green paper and balloons, fish related toys of Aditi, food fish and mock edible sea ( marshmellow and rusk crumbs)

GIFTS: Fish sticker books among other stuff

Some friends whom you might know who made it were Abha ( Mamma Mia), JLT, S from ST, Mindfulmeanderings, Chox and the avid blog reader S. No pics of them for obvious reasons.

Mera Cythle

Kids do start early nowadays. Aditi is indeed fond of her "cythle"

While on it, I love the baby lisp she has- Anush never had any.

For instance, Aditi always uses tta instead of ka- so Anushka is Anushtta and Akka is Atta!!

They celebrated Raksha Bandhan in her playschool and her high point was the laddoooooooooo she got back home.

Star of the Day

Anush's Tamil Star Birthday is today, her sixth one. She received a cross word book from her grandparents .

We also gave her a copy of the book that she 'wrote' and illustrated almost a year ago, soon after hr fifth birthday. I am glad, we atleast got it printed in time for her birthday.

You are our little star and the guiding light for your sister. May you always smile and shine!

Mela on the Menu

My SIL from Boston has never visited an exhibition on her trips to des in the last decade!! Priority has only been family/ friends.

This time we finally mananged to take her and she got herself a beautiful Sanjhi paper cutwork piece among other things and spent some exclusive one on one time with Anush who adores her.

Red Day on a Cycle, a Keyboard recital, a PTA and Dastkaar

Hectic weekend and so satisfying except that Aditi seems to be having another bout of allergy/cough- poor thing! That did not stop her from inaugurating her new cycle. ( Anush's first that is)

Aditi celebrated red day in school or rather we did with great enthu. Pomegranates, strawberries and apples were duly packed for snack by the participative sister.

Anush had her first formal recital at the keyboard- she performed well enough as per me and very well as per her teacher. Three blind mice was perfect but Oh Susannah was almost there.

Anushka's PTA at her new big school was wonderful. Touchwood.

Made it to Dastkaar and I think I must quit going there for a couple of years till something really new gets presented.

Drive me crazy

The other day I saw a man driving his car in peak traffic with his lesser than 2 yr old baby on his lap!

Did he not care for himself or the baby? What about the others on the road?

Then I began wondering why he was doing such a thing? Maybe a single dad? Maybe an emergency? What do you think?

And yes, we know little kids like to 'drive '- Aditi does too. But only when the car is completely stationary.

City Slickers & Stories

Went to Chintamani again this weekend for more family time there.

We were stopped in a few places by protestors ( seri-culture min price related) and let go after some detours and some waiting. So a journey that would have been under two hours stretched to 3 hours but enriched us all the same.

The girls were real sports and enjoyed the lovely farms and hamlets we got to see.

More importantly Anush got a feel of bandhs, their motivation and so on.

These things make you thank God for all the many blessings you have. Touch wood.

A quick trip

Did a whirlwind trip with my maternal aunt from Delhi to Chintamani.

The drive in the rain was amazing. Everyone had a ball in any case at home.

Was wondering again why Snickers can't set up a plant there given the awesome quality of peanuts you get.

I had a haircut and am mighty pleased with the results. On the way to short hair again.

Aditi has measles- must be why she has been out of sorts since we returned from Tirupathi.

New learning- vaccines are not a complete guarantee.

I have been given a new account recently at work- one that will take me to Delhi at least once in couple of months. Beginning August. Shopping, M and MM here I come.
